New principal not yet appointed

Elliott Landon sent an email on Wednesday May 20 to the staff of the Westport Public Schools, in which he stated that Greenwich Public Schools’ press release announcing the hiring of current principal of Central Middle School, Shelley Somers, as the new Staples High School principal was premature and unofficial.

Though the Superintendent of Greenwich Public Schools, William McKersie, sent the press release on Tuesday May 19 and was picked up and reported by the Fairfield, Westport and Greenwich Patches, Somers’ appointment has yet to be made official. “Greenwich has accepted full responsibility for this error in communication,” Landon wrote.

Landon also wrote that Somers has yet to have an official interview by any members of the Westport Board of Education.

On Tuesday, May 26 at 9:00 a.m., Somers will begin the interview process, as she will be at Staples to meet with members of the community, including parents, students, and faculty.

According to Landon, Somers will be “expected to comment and receive questions about her full career and the qualities that she may bring to Westport.”  In addition, that evening she will have an official interview with the seven members of the Board of Education.
