Crews managed by the Town of Westport worked today to build a sand barricade along the length of Compo Beach to protect houses and town buildings along the shore, such as the playground and the beach pavilion.

In addition, battery shortages at stores such as CVS forced many retailers to order last-minute shipments of crucial storm retail items: batteries, bottled water, and flashlights.

Hurricane Sandy is expected to make landfall late Sunday evening. Residents in coastal and near-coastal areas have been asked to evacuate the area by the Westport police. Residents have been urged to stay indoors.

Schools have been closed for Mon. and Tues. by Superintendent Elliott Landon.
