Over December break, the Wreckers won the Todd Burger Holiday Tournament where they beat Ludlowe and Warde.

The Staples girls’ basketball team blew out Bridgeport Central on Jan. 3 with a huge 68-13 victory.

The Wreckers were led by captain Ari Gerig ’20 with 15 points and Kathleen Cozzi ’20 with 10 points. Captain Marisa Shorrock ’20 also led the team with over 14 assists.

It all started in the first quarter, where the Wreckers used numerous steals on the defensive side which led to quick transition layups. By the end of the quarter Staples built a comfortable lead of 27-1 and were up 44-7 at the half.

According to head coach Paco Fabian, the team went into the second half with a few goals.

“Play team basketball on the offensive and defensive side and to work on our passing,” he said..

The Wreckers did just that and moved on to a record of 5-1. Bridgeport Central dropped to a 1-5 record.

The Wreckers have big games coming up vs. Danbury, Norwalk and Trumbull. Despite their big victory against. Central, they still have a lot of work to prepare for these games

“We still need work on our our finishing. If we get it down we will be unstoppable,” Nicole Holmes ’21 said.

The Wreckers will take on the Danbury Hatters at home on Tuesday, Jan. 7. They will work on their defensive press, rebounds and offense the next couple of days to prep.

“We have to prepare for a hard next game,” Alva Nordin ’20 said.
