Enjoying the comforts of a sizeable home crowd last Friday afternoon, the Wreckers baseball squad jumped out to big lead early on over rival Darien and never looked back, winning by a final tally of 9-5. With the win, the Wreckers not only stretched their winning streak to six games, but they also staked sole claim to first place in the FCIAC.

“This win just gives us even more confidence that we can compete and win every game we play in,” said tri-captain Justin Gallanty ’14. “We’re really firing on all cylinders right now.”

The Wreckers were led by a near complete game effort from Ryder Chasin ’14, who came within one out of going the distance while striking out six and allowing just six hits.

“Ryder got hit a little bit early on, but he made an adjustment and shut them down from there on out,” said catcher Adam Dulsky ’14.

The Wrecker bats had Chasin’s back the whole game, scoring four runs in the second inning, then responding with another four run outburst in the sixth to silence a Darien squad that had managed to close the gap. Leading the charge for the Wreckers were a duo of juniors – Ross Poulley, who had two hits including a home run that managed to just stay to the right of the left field foul pole, and  Nathan Panzer, who notched three RBIs on the day. Also contributing were tri-captain Nick Vega ’14 with two hits and two runs, and Noah Yokoi ’16 who also had two hits with one RBI.

“The whole lineup contributed to this win, with some guys even coming off the bench in big spots and getting the job done,” said tri-captain Sam Ellinwood ’14. “Friday’s game is an example of our full capabilities, and that’s how we’re going to need to play to win some championships later on this season.”

Up next for the Wreckers is a home game this Wednesday against Bridgeport Central, with first pitch at 4:00 p.m.

About the Contributors
Will McDonald
Will McDonald, Managing Editor
At first glance, one would never know the special title senior Will McDonald holds in the Inklings room. “Ms. McNamee says I have the worst handwriting she’s seen in 20 years,” McDonald says. He admits this with pride, and from the look of his notes, with confidence that he will maintain that reputation. McDonald also lives with the struggle of sharing his name with a school janitor. Between receiving email requests to fix pipes and teachers frustrated by a lack of response to their emails, the situation has become a big mess. McDonald wasted no time getting involved with Inklings as a freshman and now along with his impressive handwriting title he is the current managing editor. Before his current position he had been a sports and news editor. His favorite pieces of work would be his article “When Stealing’s Not A Crime” and his front-page graphic for the Sandy Hook edition. On top of his position on the Inklings staff, McDonald is also the captain of the boy’s cross-country team. He spent his summer working at the Sherwood Island Nature Center. Outside of work and school McDonald likes to read, watch movies, listen to music by Mumford & Sons and enjoy pancakes at his favorite restaurant, Chips. As McDonald approaches this year at Inklings he shares, “knowing that this is my final year is saddening, but at the same time exciting because of all of the great things that I know are still left to be accomplished”.
