Popcorn at the beach: Compo hosts drive-in movie

Popcorn at the beach: Compo hosts drive-in movie

Megan Brown ’17, Staff Writer

Compo Beach hosted a drive-in movie showing the 1984 film “Ghostbusters” on Saturday, Oct. 1st at 7pm.

This event, courtesy of Homes with Hope and the Westport Cinema Initiative (WCI), accommodated about 100 cars filled with family, friends, and lots of popcorn, provided by Joey’s by the Shore.

With $30 car donations, Homes with Hope was able to increase its stock of food, safe emergency shelter, and permanent supportive housing for those with lack thereof around town.

The Ghostbusters movie, based on the 1984 supernatural classic, is about parapsychologists that start a ghost catching business in New York City. It is perfect for people of all ages and sexes.

Jeff Wiser, president of Homes with Hope stated that, “We were looking for a fun new fundraiser to replace our Castles in the Sand (CitS) event. We held CitS every spring for about 16 years, but we felt it was underappreciated and not as exciting as it had once been.” Stephan Rowland ’17 came up with the idea for a drive-in movie, and Parks and Rec was very enthusiastic about it, as was the Westport Cinema Initiative.

Sandy Lefkowitz is the executive director for the WCI and believed that the drive-in movie was an ample success. “It attracted a family audience as well as  a teen population,” Lefkowitz said.

“We had a capacity number of cars and partnering with Homes with Hope contributed to its success. But we couldn’t have succeeded without the support of Dan Devito and the Parks and Rec staff.”
“We knew that the movie company charged over $3000, so in fact, all the proceeds went to pay for the movie,” Weiser stated, “but it was a good community awareness raiser. More people know about Homes with Hope, and the Westport Cinema Initiative.”
