Westport Public Library Invites Students to Write

Westport Public Library Invites Students to Write

How high can poetry take you?

With respect to the Westport READS 2012 program, which is part of the Westport Public Library, the library staff is encouraging Staples students and the rest of the Westport K-12 community to participate in their annual poetry contest. This year’s theme is Amelia Earhart and what flight represents to the poet.

Flight inspiration can be addressed in a variety of ways depending on what inspires the poet to “fly.” The Westport Public Library website poses the following questions to help spark imagination, “ Is it a journey? A staircase? A lift off from LaGuardia after a three-hour delay? Something a bird does? A quick escape?”

For students with a passion to write, this contest is a great way to communicate feelings about flight in a poem that can be a simple haiku, or even a 150 word poem that rhymes.

“Staples students should think of this poetry contest as an opportunity to write for fun, rather than writing for a homework assignment. Everyone needs a creative outlet, and this contest is a chance to write whatever you want, as long as it is a poem and has something to do with the idea of ‘flight,’” said librarian Marcia Logan.

Judging will take place in three categories being elementary school, middle school, and high school. First, second, and third place winners will be rewarded with Barnes and Noble gift cards, which furthers the reading initiative of the Westport Public Library.

The deadline for this poetry opportunity is Friday Jan 13. For any further questions Contact Jaina Lewis at 203.291.4809, [email protected] or Kris Nash at 203.291.4813, [email protected].

Haley Zeldes, Sports Editor
Haley Zeldes is finally a Senior Girl who, along with the other queens in her class, orders the school to “13OW DOWN” to her as she takes on her final year at Staples. Although she is excited to claim her throne, she has not lost sight of the fact that this may be the beginning to her end. Zeldes has made it a priority of hers to stay committed to Inklings for she feels that Inkling’s strength is how everyone works really well together, creatively, and works off of each others ideas to make the best stories possible-she definitely wants to remain apart of that community where she is confident as the new features editor. “I’ve watched other writers in the past take the stories that I’ve wanted-but not anymore. It’s my turn now,” Zeldes said. In addition to writing feature articles, what you can expect to see from Zeldes is some eye-catching layouts in the next issue. She is extremely excited to experience layout again and to make interesting pictures that will help the pieces stand out. Queen Haley is one hard worker that’s for sure, who is willing to put her best foot forward to make the paper as successful, if not more successful, than it has been in previous years. “I want to leave my mark on inklings and share my knowledge with underclassmen,” Zeldes said. “I’m hoping that when I leave, Inklings will continue to strive.”
