Girls Volleyball Falls to Ridgefield in FCIAC Semi-Finals

The Staples Girls Volleyball team lost 3-1 (21-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-21) in FCIAC semi-finals on November 5, 2011 to the Ridgefield Tigers at Ludlowe High School. Greeted by a large crowd, the girls came out strong in their first game. Right away, Katie Platt ’13 had seven straight service points in the beginning of the game. With an 8-1 lead, the Wreckers were able to keep their passes concise and hits strong to secure their lead. They finished the first game excited, with parent and fan support. Ridgefield narrowly defeated Staples by two points in the second game. It looked as if Staples was going to beat the Tigers, with a 19-13 lead during the match. However, Staples had difficulty returning Ridgefield’s eight consecutive service points. Ridgefield took the lead at this point and finally ended the match with a serve that Staples was unable to return.

The Wreckers made a valiant effort in the third game, with notable kills by Grevers and blocks by Augie Gradoux-Matt ’12. The Tigers gained an 8-5 lead early in the match after Staples was unable to return four service points. The Wreckers put up a fight throughout the entire game, a match for the Tigers on every point.

The fourth game would decide who would advance to the FCIAC finals and eventually play Darien. The Wreckers had a slight lead in the beginning, soon ended by a Ridgefield kill from the outside. Ridgefield then advanced four points after four straight aces. The game remained close but Ridgefield had consistent kills and played smart defense that eventually shut the Wreckers out. The final game ended at 25-21, with Ridgefield advancing to the finals.
“Although it’s disappointing that we didn’t pull through with a win, we definitely tried our hardest and played well,” Lily Rappaport ’13 said. Although the girls are done with FCIACS, they are looking forward to advancing in the state tournament later this month.

Now a senior, Beispel’s jam-packed day begins when she wakes up at 6:45 a.m.—which she admits is cutting it a little close—followed by going to school, heading to her club meetings, working on her Inklings articles, and finally completing her homework. In fact, she once stayed up until 3 a.m. to complete her work. For Beispel, an important aspect of the weekend is catching up on all the lost sleep from the busy school week: "I can sleep 'til the afternoon, it’s a talent!” As an editor this year, she will surely have no problem staying at late night layouts to get her job done.
