Verizon iPhone Released

The iPhone for Verizon Wireless was released today, Jan. 11, at Verizon’s special event, which started at 11:00AM PST.  It is essentially an iPhone 4 with compatibility for Verizon’s CDMA network.  It will be available for preordering for current Verizon Wireless customers on Feb. 3, 2011, and official preorders will begin on Feb. 10.

Contrary to what was previously speculated, the iPhone will not support Verizon’s new 4G LTE network, and it will also not include a SIM card for global roaming.

The iPhone 4 for Verizon will also include a 3G hotspot app, which will enable anyone using the phone to turn it into a Wi-Fi hotspot for up to five other devices.

Although there was controversy in 2010 regarding the placement of the antenna on the sides of the phone, its location remains majorly unchanged for the Verizon version of the iPhone 4.

According to Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg, the carrier is ready to handle the data of a smartphone influx.  “Whether they are iPhones or Droids, they are smartphones,” Seidenberg said. “Regardless of the mix, we are prepared to carry more data.
