Despite the official spring season staring on March 22, the boys’ lacrosse team’s season started months ago. Since mid-winter they have been working hard preparing for the season.

“We’ve been training since December trying to get in-shape for the upcoming season. We joined a winter league at the SONO field house. Also we’ve been lifting weights and running on a daily basis,” quad-captain Jack Ambrose ’10.

The team expects their off-season dedication to show as the spring season starts. They hope this extra edge will help them improve from last season, where their record was 10-8.

The team will also use their previous year’s experience to aid them. “Last year everyone was new starter, only one or two had started in the previous year. A whole year of staring experience should pay off,” said head coach Paul McNulty.

Additionally, this year the team only lost one starting senior, Andrew Lanzaro ’09. Given the small change in the starting line up, the boys are anticipating using their strong team chemistry to their advantage.

“We’re really fortunate to have a strong and balanced group of returning starters who enter this season with more experience and enthusiasm than ever before,” quad-captain Kip Orban ’11 said.

Even with the odds on their side, the team will be put to the test early on. Their first opponent is Ridgefield who was last season’s FCIAC champion.

Their difficult schedule continues as the Wreckers’ second opponent is Horace Greeley from Chappaqua, N.Y, who made it to their Sectional Semi-Finals.

Despite the challenges ahead, the boys certainly stand a chance of being very successful, and they have confidence that this season will stand out from pervious years.

“The team has a lot of potential considering we are ranked fifth in the state as of now, and I don’t think Staples has broken the top 20 ever,” said Greenberg.

Starting the season with this high ranking, the team already has high expectations for themselves. “I think we will be very competitive right now,” said McNulty.

Excited for the spring season to finally begin, the team will especially be looking forward to playing their big rivals, Weston and Greenwich. However, the Wreckers hope to extend their game and play competitively against every team they take on.

“Our expectations are high for this year. We are looking to compete with the top teams in the state this year,” said quad-captain Austin Waiter ’10.

Overall the season ahead looks promising for the team, and has the possibility to be the best season boys’ lacrosse has had in years.

“[I’m excited] for everyone to start coming to games. We have such a great team assembled this year, the sky is the limit for us,” Ambrose said.

Come out and support the boys as they face off against Ridgefield on our home turf on April 8 at 5:30 p.m.
