Following their first win of the season on Jan. 8, the Wreckers boys’ swimming and diving team fell to defeat against Darien, 113-73. The Wreckers’ record dropped to 1-4, while Darien moved to 2-1-1.

The Wreckers were looking to continue their success following a win against Ridgefield, but Darien’s experience proved to be too much for Staples. “Darien was simply too strong a squad and too deep for my young group of swimmers to keep up with,” said Schare.

Although the Wreckers were not able to pull out a victory, the meet proved to be full of personal accomplishments, as many swimmers boosted their personal records.

“Although we lost the dual meet by a considerable amount, the team performance was solid, posting 23 personal best times. If we can continue to compete like this all season, the wins will fall into place,” said Schare.

One positive note for the Wreckers was Nathaniel Boley’s ’13 performance. The freshman swam the 200-meter individual medley in a time of 2:20.45, which is the 8th fastest time in school history.

Boley’s success at the meet continued as he won the 400-meter freestyle with a time of 4:22.26. This time is the 3rd fastest recorded time in school history for the 400-meter event.

Other standout performances came from Cory Bacon ’11 and Matt Wisher ’12, who both won 100-meter butterfly and 100-meter backstroke respectively. Zach Slater ’11 also won the diving competition for the second meet running, finishing with an impressive score of 228.65 points.

Despite losing the meet, the Wreckers showed that they have a lot of depth and that there is talent across the team. “As long as there were a bunch of personal bests we can call the meet a success even with a loss,” said senior tri-captain Mac Mombello ‘10.

Fellow senior tri-captain Cameron Bruce also agrees that despite the loss, the team’s work ethic cannot be doubted. “Our team spirit and sportsmanship was high, with everybody cheering the racers on, which was really great to see,” said Bruce.

The Wreckers hope to get their season back on track when they face the Norwalk co-op team on Jan. 27.
