Holiday sugar cookies

Holiday sugar cookies

Let’s be honest, the holidays are meant for eating. Its almost as if the little voice in our head that says “I’m full!” after a huge meal just doesn’t turn on around Christmas. Appetites become insatiable, pant buttons pop off, and we all get a whole lot happier.

The best treats during Christmas time are cookies, especially ones lathered in homemade red and green frosting. This sugar cookie recipe is versatile, delicious and foolproof. Even if you’ve never gone near a rolling pin, you’ll probably be able to make these treats.

Decorated Sugar Cookies

Ingredients:

Cookies-

1 1/2 cups flour

1/4 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup unsalted butter (one stick)

1/2 cup white sugar

1 egg

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Royal Icing-

2 egg whites

2 cups powdered sugar

Directions:

Step 1: Cream together the softened butter and sugar for two minutes on high, then mix in the egg and vanilla extract.

Step 2: Sift together the flour, baking powder and salt before slowly mixing them into the butter mixture.

Step 3: Once the dough forms, transfer it onto plastic wrap, wrap the dough into a disk until it is fully covered and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

Step 4: Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

Step 5: Roll out the cookie dough on a floured surface until it’s 1/4 inch thick.

Step 6: Once the cookie dough is rolled out, use any holiday cookie cutter to form the cookie. Once you cut out the cookie, place it onto a greased baking sheet.

Step 7: Bake the cookies for 10 minutes exactly. In the meantime, get started on the Royal Icing.

Step 8: Beat the egg whites in a metal bowl until frothy, about one minute.

Step 9: Gradually pour in the powdered sugar, and beat the mixture on high for 2-3 minutes, or until glossy.

Step 10: Transfer the icing into another bowl, before coloring it for decoration. The icing will be the consistency of glue.

Step 11: Decorate the cooled sugar cookies using either a knife or a piping bag before adding sprinkles or any other candy.

Step 12: Store the cookies in an airtight container and enjoy! These cookies are a perfect gift and treat for the Holidays.
