Rain was not going to bring the Girls’ Varsity Soccer Team down in their game against Bridgeport Central on September 15 at Loeffler Field. In a 5-0 win on their home turf, the girls gained possession of the ball early in the game. After a failed attempt at a goal, saved by the Central goalie, Staples got their first ball in the net almost 20 minutes into the first half with an upper right hand corner shot by Turner Block, ’13. There was no stopping them after that!

By the end of the first half, Staples was up 3-0, with two more goals Ryan Kirshner, ’13. Kirshner had second goal shortly before the end of the first half with an assist by Abbey Lake, ’12.

The halftime did not stop Kirshner as she managed to get another goal in the beginning of the second half. The crowd went wild as she finished the hat trick and increased Staples’ lead. The goals kept coming. Chloe Rosenfield, ’14 gave a powerful pass to fellow freshman, Maggie Walsh, who completed the play with a goal.

The Central goalie did not know what she had coming, but Staples goalie, Callie Ahlgrim, ’13, was more than prepared for the last minute shot on goal. The Lady Wreckers were able to keep their shut out with a save by Ahlgrim.

“We did great, especially for it only being the second game of the season. We were able to communicate and pass together as if we had had numerous games. Our teams works extremely well together,” said Kirshner.

Their spectacular performance was fueled by footwork, agility, and speed. The team dynamic looked excellent as the girls communicated and defended their territory on the field today. The girls will face Danbury at Danbury High School at 4 p.m. on Monday.
