You Got to Be in it to Win it: Lucky 50 Will Win Parking Lottery

You Got to Be in it to Win it: Lucky 50 Will Win Parking Lottery

As of Wednesday, Nov. 2, the heavily anticipated Junior Parking Lottery will take place. The wait is finally over.

Assistant Principal, of the junior class, Patrick Micinilio, explains that the wait ends in November in order to give seniors priority and for the various in school functions that take place during the first quarter, where many parking spots are needed.

The fate of the 162 juniors will be determined when the 50 recipients are announced. According to Micinilio, two-thirds of the raffle will be saddened to find that their name is not on the list posted outside the AP’s office on either Thursday afternoon or Friday morning.

“About 162 people applied. 112 people cut. No special considerations,” said Micinilio.

Contrary to lottery rules, some students, such as Wakeman parker, Danielle Williams ‘13, believes that the students who have had their license longer should receive first priority in the lottery. “So all you youngsters go walk from Wakeman.”

Whether you’re a football player with equipment, padding, and helmets, or a base player in the orchestra, the 15-minute walk from Wakeman is still applicable.

For those unfortunate 112 students who did not receive a spot in the first lottery, a second one will be held prior to Winter Break. However, the chances of receiving a spot are not increased, as more will obtain their license in between these two lotteries.

Those who are not chosen are forced to continue the daily walk from Wakeman.

Williams, notes that the lengthy walk requires her to leave her house before even some students think about leaving their breakfast table.

“You have to be there so early in the mornings to even get a decent spot. I leave at 6:39 with a 15 minute drive.”

By the end of May, parking will become available to all juniors, upon the exodus of seniors when they leave for senior Internships.

Although it has been widely assumed in previous years, Micinilio makes it clear that there is no parking lot specifically for juniors.

One of the sole risks of being disqualified in the lottery is parking in the Staples Lot without a parking sticker.

“Up until maybe 2 weeks ago it wasn’t a real issue with juniors parking in the lot, but over the last two weeks I’ve seen a significant spike,” said Staples Security Guard, David Sweet.

But for those juniors who abide by the Staples traffic laws and have their license, they can be waiting on the edge of their seats for the outcome of round 1 of the lottery.
