In the biggest margin of victory CIAC history, the boys’ varsity soccer team ended its stellar season with a 4–0 triumph over New Milford in the state finals on Nov. 21 at Ridgefield High School’s Tiger Hollow Stadium. This is the twelfth state championship in the team’s history, and its first since 1993.

The stadium was packed with a crowd of thousands, including students, parents, faculty members and of course, the ever–loyal Superfans.

“We have the best fans around and they were the twelfth man in our run through the FCIAC and State tournament,” said quad–captain Alan Reiter ’10.

The team went into the game with a strong plan.

“Our philosophy is always to make the other team adapt to us,” said head coach Dan Woog.

Inspired by the huge crowd, the team started the game with a bang, scoring its first goal a mere two minutes after kick–off. The goal was scored with a header by Brendan Lesch ’11 off a throw in from Mikey Scott ’11.

The second goal came just four minutes later, when a corner kick by Scott found quad-captain Mike White ’10.

Just three minutes after the start of the second half, Frankie Bergonzi ’11 crossed the ball to Greg Gudis ’11 for the goal. Less than three minutes later, the score was 4–0 with another goal by Lesch.

This win was an enormous accomplishment for the entire team.

“It has been the goal of everyone since the moment they became a part of the team,” said goalie Michael McCarthy ’10.

Ending the season with a shutout was bittersweet for the team’s eleven seniors. With an amazingly close team dynamic, it is an experience that all of the seniors will miss.

“But with that said, I’m happy it ended the way it did. I couldn’t have asked for a better game to be my last,” McCarthy said.
