Staples students walk the same halls 185 days a year. They take the same path to the same classes, five days a week. They see the same people, and normally engage in the same conversations, on a daily basis. It takes skill to employ this dialect–one does not simply “talk” about school or sports or blunt kid– this level of conversation takes precision and erudition beyond what a student can learn in the class room. This is language. This is what you would hear in the halls of Staples High School.
This is the [stuff] Staples students say:
1. “I’ll pay you 200 dollars for your junior parking sticker.”
2. “I got kicked out of the library again.”
3. “I’m out of breath from walking up the three flights of stairs.”
4. “I play sports for the logowear.”
6. “I ran a 12 minute mile in gym today. Personal best.”
5. “The tissues in the classrooms feel like sandpaper on my nose.”
7. “I wonder what I’m going to put on my senior sweatshirt four years from now.”
8. “I hope my new default gets as many likes as a freshman girl’s.”
9. “My school is actually called Staples, so no, I am not referring to the office supply store.”
10. “I’ve seen the same LF shirt three times in the last 20 minutes. Guess the LF sale was last week!”
11. “I went to the diner every day last week.”
12. “I wonder where my locker is.”
This is the [stuff] Staples students don’t say:
1. “I take AP classes because I enjoy the material.”
2. “I can’t stop to pick up a muffin on the way to gym because if I eat this close to working out I’ll cramp up!”
3. “I’m so happy with my B+.”
4. “The school paper towels are, like, SO absorbent.”
5. “I studied all night for my badminton final. I’m so ready!”
6. “First period swimming on Monday? Doesn’t get any better than this.”
7. “Why do we opt for North Face backpacks as our school bag of choice? So we can also use them when we embark on outdoor adventures!”
8. “When I get an A, I get the greatest satisfaction from just knowing that I understand the material.”
9. “I go to concerts because I enjoy the music–Bassnectar sounded so amazing live!”
10. “I’m going to pregame so hard for the upcoming Players’ production”
11. “I love it when the TVs don’t work”
12. “Thanks class of 2010–Homecoming is more fun now!”
