Spreading by word of mouth, the new Scrabble application, Words with Friends by Zynga has become increasingly popular.

After seeing a friend playing it in class, Brittany Hamlin’11, intrigued, downloaded the addicting mobile game becoming part of the phenomenon.

“You can play with random people, but I only play with my friends,” Hamlin said.

Words With Friends provides players with the option to select a random opponent where they will be set up with one of the millions of users, or to add a friend’s username and request to play a game against them.

Emerson Lovell ’12 took advantage of Words With Friends’ option to play a friend in order to spell out ‘PROM’. Lovell said he used the messaging feature of the game to add a question mark and make it official.

The messaging feature allows players to communicate, very similar to texting or iming. “I usually don’t use the messaging feature other than to tell people that their word isn’t real,” Lovell said.

The easily accessible and social game not only allows players to communicate, but remain constantly engaged in the game. Julia Tziolis ’13 said that she plays everyday, that the game notifies her when her opponent(s) respond. While Lovell remains busy, recalling that at one point he was actively playing eight games simultaneously.

Zygna’s mission statement is “to connect people through games. We make social games that are free and accessible for everyone to play. Everyday millions of people interact with friends and express their unique personalities through our games.”

Just like Hamlin, Lovell, and Tziolis, millions of users are constantly checking their iPhones, iPods, and Androids to spell out the wittiest comeback.
