Boys Soccer Takes One Final Win to End Regular Season

Staples boys soccer finished their regular season Wednesday and celebrated their seniors with a huge 9-0 victory over Harding.

“We always play Harding this way. They are great guys and we really appreciate them coming,” said captain Jake Malowitz ‘12.

The game was a great way to end the season since it gave many of the starters a chance to rest and gave many of the other varsity and even some JV players a chance to play.

The first half ended with the Wreckers leading 6-0 with goals scored by Jack Scott ’14, David Hoffman ’13, Terence Gibbons ’12, Max Hoberman ’12, Noah Bender ’13, and Dylan Hoy ’13.

In the second half, Diego Alanis ’14 scored twice, along with Will Meinke, who took a far shot and scored in the 88th minute of the game, bringing the final score to 9-0.

“The guys that played today really did a great job,” Malowitz said.

During the game, the team went through three goalies, giving each a chance to play. Captain James Hickok ‘13 played for a portion of the first half but came out without Harding taking one shot. Tucker Rizzi ‘13 played next and again didn’t even have the chance for a save. Ryan Moran ’13 played the last part of the game and he got the first and only save of the game.

Looking forward to the rest of the season, both Malowitz and Coach Dan Woog know that the team is ready to improve upon their performance in the regular season. “Everyone was disappointed with the season as a whole. We had 4 disappointing ties at home and 2 disappointing losses,” Malowitz said.

However, “We are ready,” Woog said. “If you play staples soccer, the postseason is what you play for.”

“We only play one game at a time. We have one game to play on Friday and if we win, we have a second game; if we win again, we have a third game.”

The team as a whole is prepared to go forward with a positive attitude and plan to play each FCIAC game as if it is their last.

“We are ready to rebound. We are absolutely confident, our focus has increased, and we are excited,” Malowitz said.
