Lady Wreckers Triumph Over Ludlowe’s Falcons

Now holding an impressive 11-1 record, the girls’ varsity volleyball team defeated one of their main competitors, Fairfield Ludlowe High School. The game was played to support Just Socks and Underwear, a charity created by captain Joosje Grevers ‘12 and her brother, Lucas Grevers ’14. The goal of the charity is to raise money and to collect clothing for a high school in a disadvantaged area in Bridgeport. Grevers began the game with a short speech about her charity and she encouraged fans to purchase raffle tickets to win a $50 gift card to Shake Shack, where all proceeds go to Just Socks and Underwear.

Kenzie Roof ’12 hit a kill within the first few minutes of the game and put the Lady Wreckers ahead. Grevers followed with a deep set over the net, making the score 3-2. Her momentum continued when she killed the ball. After Ludlowe was starting to come back, Anna Fiolek ’13 served three consecutive aces, making the score 8-3. Augustine Gradoux-Matt ’12 killed the ball over the net multiple times. A long and intense rally ended with Link reviving the ball and Grevers tapping it over. The game was won 25-21 when Roof killed it.

Coach Shepro put in Link, Grevers, Roof, Dani Kosinski ’12, Amanda Pacilio ’12 and the only sophomore on varsity, Amelia Brackett. The game started with another intense rally, ending with Grevers blocking Ludlowe’s bump over the net, making the score 2-0. Brackett, Link and Gradoux-Matt all made several kills throughout the second game. Courtney Barry ’13 was put into the lineup and shortly after spiked the ball over the net, making the score 21-13. Pacilio’s serve was not returnable, and therefore won the game for the Lady Wreckers 25-15.

Ludlowe began the final game with a hit out of bounds, putting the Lady Wreckers in the lead. Kosinki then hit a nonreturnable serve furthering their lead. Ludlowe then lost control of the ball and the score became 4-2. Fiolek continued the winning streak with a kill. The game continued on and Link’s hit was blocked out of bounds, making the score 20-9. In the last minutes of the game, Ludlowe hit the ball out of bounds and Staples won the game.

Staples won their game at home 3-0 vs. St. Joes on Wednesday, Oct 19. They next take on Norwalk at home at 5:30 in honor of Senior Day.
