On March 15, 2011, Columbia Professor of environmental health sciences, and current author of novel, The Vertical Farm: Feeding the World in the 21st Century, Dickson Despommier made a lasting impression on many
members of Westport’s community at the local library.
This event, co-sponsored by the local organization Green Village Initiative (GVI) discussed Despommiers goal to solve America’s current food, water, and energy crisis through the alternative idea of growing farms inside skyscrapers. Despommier made the point that this will ultimately help the country with using less land, and wasting fewer resources.
Prior to his appearance in Westport, Despommier made an appearance at the ever-popular TED Conference. Here, Despommier emphasized that, “one indoor acre can produce as much as ten acre of outdoor farm land.” To check this lecture out visit the link, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIdP00u2KRA.
At the library, Despommier had books open for purchasing and signing, where a percentage of the purchases were donated to the library.
