The New York Mets are being sued 300 million dollars due to fraudulent contributions by Bernie Madoff. Mets fans aren’t too happy as this may affect the Mets’ performance in the upcoming season.
Ben Greenspan 14’ has followed the Mets throughout his entire childhood and believes they will unfortunately become the laughing stock of the league.
“They might get lucky though,” he said. “You never know what’s going to happen with the Mets.”
The New York Mets have struggled with debt and player management throughout much of their franchise history. During the 1986 season, the team was full of controversy as four starting players were arrested while others were questionably injured. In the end, they surprisingly won their first World Series since 1969. Could something similar happen this year?
Charlie Leonard ‘14, is very optimistic about the forthcoming season. The longtime Met fan is confident in the team’s line up and believes money won’t be that much of an issue
“I think the Madoff situation will only inspire the Mets to win the World Series,” he said.
Unlike Charlie, Adam Dulsky 14’ is not looking forward to the upcoming season. He believes the Mets will go bankrupt and will have insufficient money to purchase admirable players.
“I fear the Mets will be the worst team in the MLB,” he said. “Nevertheless, it’d be good because we’d get the first overall draft pick next season.”
Even though many Mets’ fans dislike Madoff, he made some pleasant contributions for the team. In 2008, the Mets signed Johan Santana for a $137.5M contract.
In 2009, Citi Field was finally finished for a total cost of $850M. After all, Mets’ fans should credit Madoff’s corrupt investments as they have certainly furnished a favorable past. The question becomes will Madoff’s money now do harm in setting the New York Mets back for years to come.
