There’s a new hangout in Westport–and it’s the sweetest one yet.  On Apr. 18, Crumbs Bake Shop opened its doors to dozens of eager (and hungry) Westporters.  Though I was unable to attend the bakery’s grand opening, I stumble into the store nearly a week later, with great expectations and a greater hunger.

At first I think I have entered Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory: baked goods are arranged in rows behind sparkling glass cases and towers of cupcakes seem to be sky high.  Expecting to be greeted by oompa loompas, I see the familiar smiling face of a Staples student instead.

“My favorite’s raspberry swirl!” she whispers to me from behind the counter.  And finally–after much debate–I settle on selecting the “Best Seller Collection,” composed of 12 miniature versions of the store’s top frosted treats.

Even at six o’clock, the line is five or so people deep.  I consider taking a first bite as I wait in line, but the service is prompt, and I find a seat soon enough.

My tasting of these confections is methodical; although I choose to consume only the cupcakes, I savor every last bite.  I am first drawn to a strawberry–frosted cupcake, hiding in the upper left of my tray. As a hardcore lover of all items strawberry, I am jubilant to taste the perfectly sweetened frosting.  Nor does the vanilla cake fail to impress: it is moist and delicious, while skillfully contrasting the frosting’s creamy consistency.

The next to greet my taste buds is vanilla coconut.  Although I find the pieces of coconut too thick (Barefoot Contessa did it better), the vanilla cake itself remains spot on.

After devouring cupcake upon cupcake, I determine cookie dough to be my favorite.  The most creative of the bunch, this cupcake is topped with a vanilla cream cheese frosting (that would do Barefoot Contessa proud) and a small chocolate chip cookie.  The internal filling of dark chocolate fudge also gives a twist to the classic vanilla cake.

There is no other cupcake like it. Honorable mentions, however, go to my new friends, red velvet and Oreo.

I am incredulous as I stare down at 12 empty cupcake liners.  But nonetheless, I am pleased to recommend Crumbs as the perfect after school snack for all students.  The late hours also accommodate for working parents to grab a bite on their way home.

And although some of the treats are pricey in this economy, the cupcakes are certainly well worth it.  I assure you that after a cupcake, you will be left without a crumb to spare.
