Head Staples boys’ basketball coach David Goldshore met with his team on April 8 to announce that he is stepping down from the job. In his four years at Staples, Goldshore led his team to four straight FCIAC championship games, two state championship finals appearances, and won back-to-back FCIAC championships in 2025 and 2026 (including Staples’ first in 62 years).
“This was not an easy decision,” Goldshore said in a statement on Instagram. “I have always believed this position deserves your full heart, full energy and full presence.”
Back-to-back FCIAC coach of the year, Goldshore was the winningest coach in Staples history, going 85-19 (81.7 PCT) in his four year tenure.
“I am deeply grateful for every player, family, coach, colleague and supporter who made this journey so meaningful,” Goldshore said.
This past season, the Wreckers had their best season of all time, starting 26-0 but ultimately losing 79-72 in triple overtime to West Haven in the state finals. The Wreckers ended at 26-1 and the #2 ranked team in Connecticut.
“While the on-court accomplishments are significant, the relationships that Coach Goldshore built and the positive culture that he fostered within the program are even more meaningful,” Athletic Director VJ Sarullo said in a press release.
Goldshore’s defensive system and emphasis on communication and playing “team ball” enabled the Wreckers to feel comfortable on the court and have success.
“Goldshore’s attention to detail, especially on the defensive side, allows us to play hard and be physical knowing that everyone on the court has got your back,” Henry Veissid ’28 said.
Goldshore’s coaching achievements have not gone unnoticed in the Staples community and will be a tough act to follow in upcoming years.
“I felt a mix of emotions [after Goldshore told us]: sad and upset,” Veissid said. “This chapter has ended, but now a new chapter is beginning and he and the teams in the past four years have set the standard and now it is our job to continue it.”
