The Staples boys’ tennis team was eliminated from the FCIAC (Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference) tournament on May 18 after losing 4-0 to the Greenwich Cardinals in the semifinals.
Greenwich got its first point from Elias Orell’s win over Aleko Vergakis ’26 in a singles match, with the score of 6-1 in both sets. Greenwich also won all three of its doubles matches, which ended up giving them enough points to win the entire semifinal and advance to the FCIAC championship against New Canaan.
Despite the 4-0 final, Staples put up a fight during close sets and long rallies, which matched the theme of the year. The Wreckers played well this season, earning a 12-3 FCIAC record and a 4-0 FCIAC quarterfinal win over Wilton.
“We have stayed close together all season and never stopped fighting,” Robert Jacob ’26 said.
In the doubles matches, Kieran Anand ’27 with Jonny Greenspan ’27, Reid O’Brien ’28 with Aaron Fortunoff ’27 and Jack McAuley ’28 with Micah Turner ’29 all played with grit against tough Greenwich duos.
The Wreckers will now shift their focus to the state tournament, which starts on May 29. With a top three finish in the FCIAC, Staples is capable of going far in the state tournament.
“Our season isn’t over yet,” Kieran Anand ’27 said. “We still believe in ourselves, and we want to make a deep playoff run.”
