For several months, toasted sandwiches have been missing in the cafeteria. Students were initially told the toaster was just broken, but it also seemed clear the long lunch lines played a role in the disappearance of the toasted sandwiches. Considering the crowd in the cafeteria everyday, removing one of the most popular lunch options probably helped speed things up and avoid even more chaos during the lunch waves.
But now, with seniors away on internships, the cafeteria is noticeably less packed. I can actually walk around now without constantly being pushed. So if overcrowding was part of the reason toasted sandwiches disappeared, then now seems like the perfect time to bring them back. This is obviously not the biggest issue facing the school, but small things like this still matter because they affect the student experience. Toasted sandwiches were one of the most popular lunch options, and students noticed when they disappeared.
What I, and the people I’ve talked to, find most frustrating about this is the confusion. If the machine is simply still broken, students should know that. If the toasting station was removed because of efficiency, that should be communicated too.
If the reduced number of students creates an opportunity to bring back the option to toast a sandwich, even temporarily, the school should consider doing so.
