The AP United States History Curriculum offers lessons on all major events and developments that happened in the country spanning from Native American civilizations to the Bush presidency. It traces the early settlements, to the major wars, revolutionary documents, scandals and triumphs. As many students flip through their current textbook, they are left wondering which events from today will make it into future editions.
Sandya Magesh ’28 believes that the Artemis II mission will definitely be covered.
“It was a big advancement in technology and push for human kind,” Magesh said.
The spaceship launched just this April and was a 10 day lunar flyby. It was the first human crewed mission to the moon in over 50 years, and it had the first women, first person of color and first non-American to go beyond low Earth orbit.
Jasmita Mani Lorenzato ’28 thinks that the Eras Tour will also be discussed in future APUSH classes.
“It was a cultural revolution and changed the course of people’s social lives,” Mani Lorenzato said.
The Eras Tour began in 2023 in Arizona and ended in 2024 in British Columbia. The show toured in Australia, Europe, Asia, South America and North America. It was the highest grossing concert tour in history with an over $2 billion dollar event. Over 10 million people attended the 149 shows. There was also a term known as “swiftonomics” where the massive influx of fan spending around the concert led to the economic impact the same as other major events.
Nadia Stubbs ‘28 is a major sports fan and believes that the emergence of F1 will make the curriculum. While Formula 1 has existed since 1950, the Netflix Series “Drive to Survive,” which first aired in 2019, has brought massive popularity.
“It has a big historical influence all over the world and now it is involved in America,” Stubbs said. “It is also a sport that has a big impact on the economy wherever the race is.”
The United States currently hosts three races including Austin, Las Vegas and Miami. The races have intrigued massive crowds of over 400,000 people.
Sarah Lyle ’28 believes that the expansion of media forms including Tiktok, Instagram, and Youtube is important to learn.
“Social media has been so impactful on people’s lives,” Lyle said.
Youtube currently has over two billion active monthly viewers worldwide. There are also over one billion active monthly viewers on Tiktok. As social media continues to be a controversy and a major factor in American life, it is probable that it has a future in the curriculum.
