European Football Transfer Window Preview

A  new year has come around, meaning the European football transfer window, which is the time period where professional soccer teams can buy and sell players, is open for the whole month of January. Some of the biggest names in soccer are expected to make moves. Here are three bold predictions for the transfer window:

Manchester United will buy at least one player from Real Madrid.

Real Madrid fired manager Rafa Benitez on January 4th and brought in Zinedine Zidane to be their new coach. Zidane will bring change to a struggling Real Madrid side and may be willing to sell some players who may be seeking moves. Manchester United has been linked with moves for five of Real Madrid’s top players: Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, Sergio Ramos, James Rodriguez and Toni Kroos.

The three most likely seem to be Gareth Bale. Bale, who was sold from Tottenham to Madrid for a world record fee of $125 million in the summer of 2013, has been linked with Manchester United for almost his whole career and reportedly wants to move back to the Premier League and play for Manchester United.

“I think Bale will finally get his move to Manchester United,” Staples boys soccer player Griffin O’Neill ’17 said. “Bale wants to come back to the Premier League and Manchester United is just the place for him to go.”

Next would be Rodriguez who claims he has dreamed of a move to a bigtime Premier League team. The Colombian attacking midfielder was recently caught driving over 125 miles per hour, leading club president Florentino Perez to say he worried about the club’s image if Rodriguez is to stay.

Toni Kroos would be third most likely. The German midfielder has failed to settle in at Real Madrid since his move from Bayern Munich and has been linked with Manchester United many times before.

A move for Ronaldo or Ramos seems less likely, however, still very possible. By the end of January, at least one of these five will be on the Red Devils.

Eden Hazard will move to Real Madrid.

The Belgian attacker/midfielder was the Premier League player of the year in 2014-15 but has struggled this season. Hazard has been linked with Real Madrid and reportedly said a move to Real Madrid would be “a dream come true.”

“Just by watching Hazard play you can tell he wants to leave Chelsea,” soccer aficionado Sam New ’18 said. “He looks uninterested and hasn’t played well all season, moving to Real [Madrid] would be the best thing for him.”

Chelsea have placed a $117 million minimum price tag on his head. Real Madrid has the money and need to improve if they want to win any trophies this year. Hazard will be the first big name Zidane buys as Real Madrid manager.

Ilkay Gundogan will leave Borussia Dortmund.

The 25-year-old German midfielder will leave his homeland and join a new club. Gundogan has been linked with a move to Italian giants Juventus and has also been linked with a move to Liverpool to join his former manager Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.

Gundogan would provide a huge help for the banged up Liverpool squad who currently have 11 players on their injury list, including stars Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge.

They may get into a bidding war with Juventus as the Italian club is still trying to replace Arturo Vidal, whom they sold to Bayern Munich in the summer.

“I’m a big Juventus fan so I would love to see them bring Gundogan in,”  New said. “He’d be a great addition and would play really well with in the midfield Paul Pogba.”
