To be a twin is one of the most difficult things a person can endure. It’s not like being a twin has a significant impact on the trajectory of your life; it can just get annoying. Once someone finds out you are a twin, you are now a museum exhibit. And as such, you are prone to getting asked some stupid questions.
“Are you friENNNds?”
“Can you woRRRK together?”
“Do you ever FIIIght?”
And my personal favorite: “WHAT IS IT LIIIIKE??
As a senior, I have grown accustomed to these typical questions.
But there is a new one this year. It’s a single question that has dominated the others, and is a question so popular and so frequently asked that I find myself wondering if the madness will ever end. No twin in his or her senior year has been able to escape it. It’s the worst question of them all: “Are you going to COLLLLEGE together?”
So here’s my answer that I will write out once and publish it to the world in hopes that I don’t have to explain this again: NO, we’re NOT going to the same school!
Look, I love my twin sister. But contrary to popular belief, she and I are different people, with different needs, different interests and different goals.
Let that sink in. Yes, we both do dance. Yes, we both do Inklings News. But one of us has red hair and wants to be a journalist and the other has blond hair and wants to be a software engineer. I hope that helps.
In a few months, we will each begin new lives as college students—but I will be in St. Louis and she will be in North Carolina.
So no, we’re not going to college together. We want freedom from the army of idiots who can see two people yet somehow think we’re only one.
And phones exist, guys. It’s not like we’re going no contact. Actually, I’ll be calling her every night. (She can’t get rid of me that easily.) We’re just (finally!) going to start living more independent lives.
