There are 43 varsity sports teams that compete throughout the fall, winter and spring seasons, yet there is only so much availability that the Staples High School weight room has to offer. So how does Staples athletics determine WHO gets to use the weight room, WHEN they get to use it and HOW LONG they get to use it for?
“All of our head coaches have access to a Google sheet that’s set up in a calendar format, and all coaches are able to enter the times that they would like to utilize the weight room,” Staples High School Athletic Director VJ Sarullo said.
The system is seemingly simple, making scheduling easy and straightforward for coaches and teams. However, there has been a noticeable rise in demand for the weight room, as more teams want to hold lifting sessions, including during their offseasons.
“For the first time since we started this process three years ago, we’re noticing that more teams want to utilize the weight room,” Sarullo said. “So we’re actually going through a process right now to try to clean up areas where we’re just adjusting times a little bit.”
Lifts are definitely an important part of many Wrecker sports teams, helping them grow and practice throughout the season.
“For football, our team’s lifts create a culture and create a bond between my teammates and me. They also make us stronger, which shows on the field,” Billy Quinn ’26 said.
Blake Harvey ’27 for girls’ lacrosse agrees.
“Lifts are very important for the team,” Harvey said, “especially during preseason because it puts your body back into shape, that way you’re not jumping into anything and getting injured.”
