Staples Dance Team performed their first ever showcase, open to the town to raise money for the growing club. The performance was at Saugatuck Elementary School on Sunday, Feb. 1 and featured both the Staples Dance Team and middle school feeder groups.
Staples jazz, hiphop and game day team performed at the showcase. The hiphop group performed to the song “Who Runs the World” by Beyoncé. Caitlin Hand ’28 performed in all three dances of the showcase.
“It was a really cool event,” Hand said. “I loved getting to show the community and my family and friends what I have been working on.”
They started at 10 a.m. for the dancers. That morning began at 10 a.m. and included staging the dances, getting into costume and cleaning up the routines one last time.
“The day started very chaotic but as the day went on the showcase came together really nicely,” captain Chloe Jordan ’26 said. “We had so much fun cheering each other on backstage”
There were over 200 community members in the audience, which Hand and Jorden said was a better turn out than expected. One of the audience members was Alyssa Minnich ’28. She came to watch her sister who is in eighth grade, in addition to her friends.
“I was really impressed by how clear the pieces were,” Minich said. She was also surprised that there were already 20 members on the middle school dance teams.
“It was cool to see the future of the dance team through the feeder program’s performance,” Jordan said.
This showcase was a great fundraiser for the growing club, and also helped recruit next year’s freshmen. The eight graders on middle school dance teams got to watch the high schoolers.
