Crumbs returns with new goodies and gluten-free options

Crumbs celebrates its return with lots of new goodies
Crumbs celebrates it’s return with lots of new goodies

Crumbs has finally delved into the gluten free world, returning to the Westport dessert scene after a roughly four-month hiatus due to bankruptcy.

In early July 2014, all Crumbs locations closed after the company went bankrupt. However, after being purchased by the owner of the Dippin Dots company, Crumbs Westport, along with many other Crumbs locations, reopened in early November.

I was very excited to hear that Crumbs would be reopening, specifically because of its new menu. Under Crumbs’ previous management, only one gluten-free option was offered—and only the Jewish holiday of passover during Passover.

When I arrived mid-Saturday afternoon, Crumbs was abuzz with happy customers. After being open for about three weeks, gluten-free options were finally in stock. Currently, the only gluten-free options are red velvet, cookies & cream and devil’s food cupcakes, along with a chocolate chip brownie.

I tried the red velvet cupcake and the gluten free brownie. Although the cupcake was not the best gluten-free cupcake I’ve ever had, it was still pretty delicious. But the brownie was definitely one of the better gluten-free brownies I’ve ever had.

Along with selling gluten free options, Crumbs also now offers flavored (not gluten-free) brownies, such as s’mores, mint chip, peanut butter swirl, cookies & cream, cookie dough, fudge frosted and mocha. I tried the cookie dough brownie. It was decadent and delicious, true to Crumbs’ usual self.

You are also able to purchase packages of Dippin Dots from the cooler in the corner of the store. It’s easy to miss the fact that Dippin Dots are sold, however, because of the minimal marketing and location of the cooler. Some of the Dippin Dots flavors are gluten free, and they are well packaged in nice portions.

With all these new options, Crumbs, located at 40-44 Post Rd East (store hours: Monday – Thursday: 8:00am – 8:00pm, Friday: 8:00am – 9:00pm, Saturday: 8:30am – 9:00pm, Sunday: 8:30am – 8:00pm) is definitely off to a nice refreshed start and I’m very excited for my next visit.

Eliza Goldberg, Staff Writer
Eliza Goldberg ’17, is one of many newcomers this year to the Inklings team, and is excited to be a part of the entire process. After taking Introduction to Journalism last year, she saw a great opportunity in taking Advanced Journalism. “It was something that seemed like it would be a lot of fun,” she said about writing for Inklings. This past summer Goldberg went to Camp Walden in Maine for her seventh and final summer as a camper. Camp has always been an integral part of her life, seeing as she has developed strong relationships with her friends there. On having to leave camp she said, “I was really not looking forward to saying goodbye, but I plan on coming back next summer to visit with my friends for camp’s 100th reunion.” Most of her camp friends live in the New York area or in Washington D.C., and she always makes time to see them during the year. In school Goldberg enjoys social studies, English, and math. When asked if Journalism is something that she would like to pursue in the future, she said, “I think so. It’s a possibility, and I could envision myself writing for a magazine or newspaper.” Other things she is passionate about include horseback riding and photography. Her love for photography only strengthened after taking Digital Darkroom at Staples. A passion for photography and writing will undoubtedly make Goldberg feel right at home on the Inklings team.
