Should Staples purchase a microwave for students?

By Teddy Dienst ’20

There has been some controversy over whether or not there should be a student microwave at Staples High School. Personally, I think it’s a waste of money and really not incredibly necessary. But Tadeo Messenger ’20 thinks otherwise.

“I think it would be beneficial if students had their own microwave in the cafeteria because it gives them a chance to bring food that they would usually microwave at home to eat and enjoy in school.”

While Messenger brings up a good a point, I feel like if Staples were to buy a microwave for students, it would end up barely being used. Staples already provides a great variety of food, so there are very few other options for students to bring besides   a snack like popcorn. Investing in a microwave is essentially pointless.

Evi Tarshis ’20 agrees. “A microwave being added for students could seem cool at first, but ultimately it’s pretty stupid. I feel like after the first week nobody would ever use it.”

If Staples were to get a microwave, the only reason I would have a desire to  go near it would be to see what people were heating up. Seriously, what food could you possibly bring from home to heat up that Staples doesn’t already offer? Would people bring food from home or would the school provide food that you can put in the microwave?

If the school were to provide microwavable food, it would just end up being more unnecessary money spent. In what way could it be beneficial? There is already a ton of hot food prepared so there isn’t a need to go through the struggle of heating something up.

Another negative is that crowding is already a problem in the cafeteria, and getting a microwave would just make it worse. It could create another line, which is the last thing the cafeteria needs.

Overall, getting a student microwave would not be a favorable decision.
