Facebook Introduces New Profile, Timeline

Facebook Introduces New Profile, Timeline

Alexandra O’Kane ‘13

In the past few days, Facebook users have been noticing some major changes to Facebook. When clicking on certain Facebook profiles, users are surprised to see one huge picture, followed by a smaller profile picture and then a timeline of events on their wall.

Facebook encourages their users to “tell your story with a new kind of profile,” known as Timeline. It is becoming popular among Staples students and some students love it, while others find it confusing and annoying.

In it’s description of the new profile, Facebook explains that there is “Your Cover, Your Stories, and Your Apps.” On the cover, the first thing on the new profile, users are to select a original image that represents them. Then, the stories, which are the most memorable posts, pictures, and activities on his or her profile. Finally, the apps, which include quoted movies and favorite songs that “let you express who you are through all the things you do,” as explained in the Facebook description.

Claudia Kann ‘13 chose to get the new profile because she thinks the presentation looks a lot better.

“I knew that everyone was going to get it eventually, so it wasn’t really a daring move, and I was curious about what it was like,” Kann said.

On the other hand, Savannah Donahue ’13, has not gotten Timeline. “I will only get it if Facebook forces me to,” she said. In fact, Facebook will force all users to convert to timeline as of Dec. 22, this Thursday.

Claire Smith ‘14 doesn’t like that people are being forced into this new profile; she wants to have her freedom to keep a normal profile because she thinks that timeline is “just too much.”

“Timeline has the right intentions but I really don’t want to see what people I just friended posted when they were in fourth grade,” she said.

Donahue finds the whole profile very confusing, especially with the cover photo and profile picture. “I don’t know which one to comment on,” she said.

Alexis Teixiera ’13, who is upset that she chose to convert to timeline, doesn’t like the two photos. “The profile picture is very diminished in value.”

Even Kann ’13 agrees “the chronology of posts gets a bit confusing because there are two sides.” She even gets new posts that are below old ones sometimes.

Other students have even more extreme opinions about the new profile. “It takes Facebook stalking to a whole new level,” said JJ Mathewson ’12. “Its absolutely terrible.”

Even though many people agree that this new profile is the direction that all of Facebook is going in, so many are upset about Timeline. “Its just not as uniform and simple,” Donahaue said.
