Thursday, December 10th marked the first night of junior and senior boys’ recreational basketball games.

Rec basketball has become a norm for Staples male students, and over one hundred boys showed up to represent their teams on the courts at Bedford Middle School.

Each year a draft takes place before the season starts, and all the boys who wish to play are designated a ranking and selected by the coaches in an attempt to make evenly talented teams.

Many of the boys who play have been part of rec basketball since elementary school, and Nathan Greenberg ’10 whose been playing since third grade is no exception.

“Its enjoying camaraderie, playing with your friends and having fun, while getting good exercise,” Greenberg said.

Although some, like Greenberg, look at recreational basketball as just a fun time, Lucy Colgan ’10 feels like the games are valued on a higher level for many of the players.

“I have noticed that my guy friends have transitioned to fanaticism,” Colgan said in reference to the rec games, “They are unbelievably obsessed.”

This fanatic attitude towards rec games may be sweeping the junior and senior boys at Staples, but there are still many who do not feel it is necessary to play.

“I don’t play rec basketball,” said Trevor Lally ’10, “it interferes too much with my other sports.”
