Principal John Dodig Discusses the Under-aged Drinking at Homecoming at the Westport Public Library

Principal John Dodig held a public discussion about the under-aged drinking at homecoming at the Westport Public Library on Thursday, Oct. 22.

This was a meeting where parents had an opportunity to tell the administration what they wanted to be done to prevent these improper actions from occuring again.

Dodig opened the parent lead discussion by saying, “We all have someone at home, and on weekends, during these events, we kiss them goodbye to go see your children. It’s not my responsibility to tend to the sick.”

Many faculty members attended the discussion, including Mr. Gusitsch, who stood behind Dodig while he addressed the mass audience.

With a large attendance scale of a few students and many parents, there wasn’t enough seating to accommodate.  Therefore, after a short introduction the crowd split up into smaller, more intimate groups to talk about what they specifically wanted changed.

Each group had a different subtopic to focus on, for example, disciplinary action or Motorcade.  The chosen leader of a gathering collected the main points made within the group and relayed it back to the whole congregation.

One of the major ideas was to more greatly enforce sports and club behavioral contracts.  The goal of this would be that if an athlete gets caught violating a behavioral code, they get kicked off their team with no special treatment.

The objective of this meeting was not to cancel future homecomings, but to come up with a solution to the inappropriate behavior displayed at the football game each year.

“I want to run homecoming in a way with the same amount of spirit, without tending to the herds of intoxicated kids,” said Dodig.

The points made at this meeting will be taken into great consideration by the administration when trying to plan other school events and next years’ homecoming.
