Alumn Preston Hirten ’07 passed away on Aug. 18 during his soccer practice at the University of Mary Washington. Hirten played varsity soccer for the Wreckers in the 2005 and 2006 seasons. “He was tough, fast, hard-nosed, loved everything about soccer,” soccer coach Dan Woog said.
“He loved his teammates and everything about Staples soccer. And everyone loved him, including opposing team members and coaches.”
The actions of the school community have done nothing but support Woog’s statement. In the two weeks after Hirten’s death, the Facebook group “Never Forget Preston Hirten” accumulated more than 800 members, a candlelight vigil was held at the Staples soccer field on Aug. 22, and a Preston Hirten Scholarship fund will be established.
In addition, Frankie Bergonzi ’11 will wear Hirten’s number, 15, until he graduates and chooses a new player worthy of the number.
“This past week has been unbelievable because of the outpouring of support from the Westport community,” Preston’s sister Ella Hirten ’11 said.
Another plan to honor Preston is already in the works. Over Labor Day weekend, University of Mary Washington will hold a memorial service organized by Preston’s friends and teammates.
As Woog expected, the 2006 soccer team has come together to support the Hirtens. The reason for this massive support was perhaps best summed up by Woog. “He was a great sportsman.
He’d run you over, but then he’d pick you up, said Woog. “Preston epitomized Staples
Soccer.”
