ACT test change allows students to retake individual exam sections
ACT changed their testing policy so that students can retake individual sections of the standardized exam beginning in 2020.
The ACT announced Tuesday that students will be allowed to retake individual sections of the exam starting Sept. 2020.
According to USA Today News, for a fee, students will be able to retake specific subjects where they did poorly. In the past, students would have to reregister, repay, and retake the entire test to improve their scores. The ACT is one of the two national standardized tests used by college admissions to see if students are prepared for college.
In light of the changes to the testing process, many students are wary of how this will impact their scores.
“I think that it will cause test score inflation and will make it more difficult for colleges to compare students,” Kieran Colasurdo ’20 said. “As a result, everyone’s scores will go up, and students will lose discrepancy in their applications.”

The ACT identifies English, mathematics, reading, and science as the four core subjects of their test, along with an optional writing section.
While the new opportunity to retake specific sections is appealing to new test takers, the opportunity is only granted to those who can afford it.
“In my opinion it is smart to be able to retake certain parts of the test that you didn’t do your best on,” Katlyn Carnahan ’21 said. “But for people who can’t afford to pay for the sections they need to retake, they would have to just deal with what they got on the initial test which isn’t really fair to them.”
