Tensions ran high in the Staples gym on Oct. 9 as the Lady Wreckers played the raining FCIAC champions, the Darien Blue Wave. Despite tough efforts put forth by Staples, Darien left with a 3-0 win.
Going into the game, the Lady Wreckers were ready to put up a fight. “We were all really excited, because we knew this would be the hardest game of the season,” said Jen Dimitrief ’13.
In the opening minutes of the first game, the score tied up at 6-6 with a kill by Lindsey Graber ’13. Then, Amelia Brackett ’14 followed with another but Darien’s scoring put them in the lead at 12-10.
After a tap over the net by Darien, Brackett had another kill. A long rally ended with a point for Darien, making the score 17-12. Lily Rappaport ’13 bumped an un-returnable ball over the net, giving Staples another point to the scoreboard.
As the end of a time out marked the beginning of the second half of the first game, Anna Fiolek ’13 hit an ace, but Darien remained in the lead, minutes later Graber hit a kill. Darien gained them two more points, finally winning 25-19 in the first game.
Graber began the second game with a kill. Then Brackett set the ball over the net to make the score 1-1. Darien followed this with a served out-of-bounds, putting Staples in the lead. Darien began to catch up when they made a kill, but then Brackett followed up with a kill of her own to make the score 4-4.
Frankie Lynch ‘13, who had 32 assists, was successful in spiking the ball over the net. Lynch was proud of the way her team played. “We kept pushing until the last point, and never gave up,” said Lynch. As the game neared its end Lauren Mushro ’13 was the next to make a kill. But, the game ended up with a kill by Darien ending 25-22.
“Going into the final game we didn’t let our past mistakes affect our playing,” said Lynch. Brackett had the first kill, followed by a long rally ending with a kill by Dimitrief. Darien followed up with kills of their own. Rappaport then hit an ace bringing the score to 15-11 in favor of the Blue Wave. After points by both Darien and Staples, the game ended with the final point going to Darien with a final score of, 25-19.
Despite the loss, the Lady Wreckers remained in high spirits. Dimitrief commented, “We really played to the best of our ability and I can’t wait to face them again in the FCIAC.”
