Staples held on to beat fourth–seeded Xavier 31–28 in the state semifinal game at Wilton High School.

Behind the explosive running of halfback Matt Kelly ’10 (212 yards, 3 touchdowns), and what would be the game–winning field goal from Santiago Cuartas ’10, the Wreckers fought off a pesky Xavier squad that featured dominant running back Julian Hayes (176 yards, 3 touchdowns). Cuartas’ field goal gave him the state record with 12 field goals on the season.

“We were the better team today, although this was definitely the most grueling game of our season this far,” said defensive back James Betar ’10.

In order to reach this semi-final game, the Wreckers had to get through 7–2 Greenwich High School on Thanksgiving Day.

Staples was in control for the better part of the first half, going into halftime with a 21–14 lead. Seemingly in charge, the Wreckers had trouble containing the Cardinal offense, led by quarterback Mike Lefflbine, in the second half.

Down 28–27, Keith Gelman ’10 led the offense deep into Greenwich territory with a short pass to Pat Murray ’11. Murray’s catch set up a 32 yard field goal and a chance to win the game. With 22 seconds left on the clock, senior kicker Santiago Cuartas ’10 nailed the field goal to put Staples up by two points.

“We have a lot of faith in Santi,” Murray said.

With two seconds left, it looked as if the Cardinals could ruin the Wreckers’ perfect season and end its state championship hopes when it set up to kick a field goal. However, this would not be the case as the steadfast defense came through with a big block from Rob Gau ’11.

The team looks to complete its perfect season Saturday, Dec. 5 against Cheshire in the state finals.
