Starbucks releases new holiday drink

For all of you coffee fanatics out there, get ready for the latest flavor-infused cup o’ joe.

Next month, Starbucks is planned to bring a new holiday themed drink to their menu nationwide that could possibly give the famous Pumpkin Spice Latte a run for its money.

The seasonal offering is the Chestnut Praline Latte (CPL), the first new holiday beverage by Starbucks in five years.

“I’ve tried every single one of their holiday drinks,” said Leah Fuld ’16, “It gets a little boring with the same options to choose from each season – I’m eager to give this one a try.”

The Chestnut Praline Latte consists of a caramelized chestnut flavor along with other spices to enhance its holiday feel and is garnished with whipped cream and praline bits.

Not only does the CPL exude the jolly look and feel of the holidays just as well, if not more than the Pumpkin Spice Latte, but it is even less calories.

A grande CPL is 330 calories whereas a Pumpkin Spice Latte of the same size is 380 calories; the holidays can be a time of unintentional weight gain for many, so why not indulge in a warm drink that’s more forgiving than an out-dated one?

Dominique Teixera ’17, is an avid Starbucks customer who has been a fan of the Pumpkin Spice Latte for years now.

“It’s like pumpkin pie in a cup – I love it,” she said, “I’d be surprised if the Chestnut Praline Latte could upstage it, highly doubtful in my opinion.”

Similarly to Teixera, Noa Wind ’15, is also a coffee lover yet takes on a different perspective to flavor enhanced coffee altogether.

“These nonsense flavors are overrated,” she said, “I get that they’re trying to keep up with the theme of holidays but at the end of the day coffee is coffee, it shouldn’t need a silly name or wasteful calories to be effective.”

The question whether the CPL will be a hit or miss and potentially surpass the Pumpkin Spice Latte remains unanswered until it makes its debut Nov. 12.
