The Top Five Super Bowl Commercials

1. Volkswagen- The Force

The Volkswagen Force is probably one of the best Super Bowl commercials ever. A seven year old dressed in a Darth Vader costume, walks around his house on a quest to find an object that responds to his magical powers, while the Star Wars Darth Vader music plays in the background. He makes adorable, yet strong attempts to exert his forces onto a doll, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and his golden retriever- no such luck. He runs outside to try to power up the Volkswagen in the driveway, and the new automatic feature allows the driver to power up the car from a distance makes it possible. Stunned by his capabilities, the child is extremely startled. This commercial will definitely make viewers smile.

2. Bud Weiser- Tiny dancer

Scenic clips of the Wild West fill the screen before a tough cowboy walks into a bar. The fun filled atmosphere quickly turns fearful as the cowboy slowly approaches the bar. He requests a ‘bud’, from the bartender… the second after he takes a sip he breaks into song: Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer”. Not so tough after all.

3. Motorola- New Device

Motorola perfected the art of parody while they mocked the Apple commercial from 1984 introducing ‘Macintosh’. By making an appearance of the new gadget, Motorola mimicked the idea by showing an Apple-obsessed world and suggesting a revolution to break from the pack and to purchase a different brand of technology.

4. Verizon- Now I Can Hear You

Finally! The iPhone will be made available for Verizon customers. Verizon poked fun at the idea that although AT&T covers 91% of Americans, their towers being so packed with different phone calls that the AT&T calls are constantly dropped. The classic Verizon nerd with black glasses picks up the iPhone and says, “Now I can hear you”.

5. Doritos- Licking Fingers

Gross, yet hilarious. No one can deny that the best part of finishing a bag of Doritos is licking the powder cheese off of your own fingers. Of course, you don’t expect someone else to do it for you.

This was a great summary of the best commercials and made me LOL. How about a shout out for the worst? What were they thinking at Groupon when they did that commercial mocking Tibet? Someone should get fired for that mess up.

Unfortunately, Motorola’s ad which “perfected the art of parody” wasn’t quite original.

In 2009 I shot a short film with the exact same concept.

CNET has already written an article about this controversy. Please check out the article, which features both the ad and the short.
