May 14 Just Doesn’t Feel Right

Lila Epstein ’10
Staff Writer

I always imagined the last days of senior year to be warm, lazy and nostalgic.  I imagined we would spend the days relaxing because of the eased work load and reminiscing about all the great times of our four years at staples.

However, this last week has been busy with teachers cramming in work for fourth quarter, hectic with forms due for prom and class trip and accountabilities, and the weather has been awful. To top it all off, we are leaving the high school forever on grim reaper day.

While, I understand Grim Reaper Day – the Teen Awareness Group’s drunk driving awareness day – is extremely important and all students should learn about the dangers of drunk driving, it is not a very happy and sentimental day to send off the seniors.

There is nothing very sentimental about going on internships at all. I agree that work experience is valuable, but we have our entire lives to work.  But now we are missing out on some crucial class of 2010 bonding time as the seniors are scattered at different work sites for our last month together. This is why I sometimes wish there was no internship program at all.

Leaving school at the beginning of May leaves me feeling unfulfilled. There is no feeling of closure for my senior year. Our minds and bodies are timed to ending school at a certain time of year, and I just don’t feel ready yet. While the prospect of completing the four-year journey of high school is exciting, it hasn’t really hit me yet. Fri. May 14 is the last day of school, but it will be an average day interrupted by an incredibly important yet incredibly depressing assembly.

I admit it is great that the seniors no longer have any homework and will be able to have great experiences learning about potential careers. But being a very nostalgic person, I am upset that the last lazy sentimental month I imagined won’t exist for over 300 students from the class of 2010.
