Too Much Luck

In the past few weeks I have seen ladybugs as much as a podiatrist sees feet. The little beetles with black spots are infesting our homes. Last week when I went to open my front door, I was stopped in my tracks by hundreds of ladybugs. Some are orange, some red, and some orangey red. They are in the window cracks, seeping from underneath the door, and outlining every corner.

My first thought was that this is actually really cool, I never thought of ladybugs as harmful or vicious. But that’s where I was wrong. While most people think they are harmless the fact of the matter is that they are the most annoying creatures ever to set foot in my house.

Almost every minute a new one pops into my room and flies around banging against the walls and making a ticking noise every time it blindly runs into something. And the only time these ticking sounds stop, are when it falls into my light and dies. It sounds harsh, but when you are trying to finish homework at 11 p.m. on a Tuesday night you would know how I felt.

I used to always love ladybugs; I’d let them crawl all over my hands and up my arms while making a wish. The only gross part is sometimes when you pick them up they release this yellow and orange fluid. Anyways, some people believe they bring good luck.  There is even a special good luck poem:

“Ladybird, ladybird fly away home. Your house is on fire and your children all roam.”

After saying it you make a wish and when the ladybug flies away your wish will come true. Apparently ladybugs bring good luck in many countries, for example in England ladybugs signify a good harvest and in France it means good weather is coming.

With so many ladybugs I could have every wish of mine granted. They wont be lucky anymore if there are so many. That’s why the four leaf clover is so lucky because finding one is rare.

Ladybugs have even infiltrated the internet.  I was reading on some websites how people try to get rid of every single ladybug in their house. One idea was to wait until they accumulate in a corner and then vacuum them all up. I mean they are annoying but that is even a little to drastic for me.

The ladybugs have finally left my house for the most part and who knows where they are now. I have had enough of them for a while but, a part of me is hoping they return next fall. I mean I could use all the luck I can get.
