Jock Talk: NFL Expectations

The time has come for another year of Sundays filled with fourth quarter comebacks, checking fantasy stats instead of finishing your English paper due the next day, yelling at your TV, praying for miracles, and rooting for the true American sport that we all love: football.

Instead of just the typical football preview, I have decided to share with you all my list of expectations for teams, players and the league for the 2009 NFL season.

So let’s get it started. During the course of the 2009-10 NFL season I expect that:

…Terrell Owens has another breakout season with the Buffalo Bills, but then manages to ruin any sanctity the franchise has next season

….Michael Vick plays a heavy roll in the Philadelphia Eagles offense. He is either used in the wildcat or maybe even a running back

…Tom Brady has his second best season of his career, behind the 2007 season where he threw 50 touchdown passes and almost led the Patriots to a perfect 19-0 season.

…at least three athletes are suspended by Roger Goodell for some sort of shenanigans (i.e: DUI manslaughter, gun possession, drug test failure).

…the Detroit Lions become a four win team. Hey, I’m being generous. They really need the love.

…Anquan Boldin will have a better fantasy season than his team mate Larry Fitzgerald. Do we all forget that up until Boldin was injured in the game against the New York Jets, the Cardinal offensive was the Anquan Boldin show.

…Michael Crabtree is the worst rookie wide receiver that was taken in the first round of the 2009 draft. The punk hasn’t shown up to training camp yet because he wants to be paid like the best wide receiver in the draft even though he wasn’t the first wide receiver drafted. As of now he is considering re-entering the NFL draft in 2010. Good luck, San Francisco.

…Maurice Jones-Drew breaks his streak and finally has a 1000 yard rushing season. That’s right, the player that’s considered a fantasy maven hasn’t broken the 1000 yard rushing mark in his three years in the league, but I believe that’s only because he shared time with Fred Taylor who is no longer a Jaguar. This means MJD is the main running back for Jacksonville making it possible to be an elite player this year.

…Ahmad Bradshaw is a better fantasy running back than ex-Giant Derrick Ward, who is now on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. According to ESPN scouts, the Giants have the number one offensive line for run blocking and number 10 for pass blocking. With Bradshaw a second-string running back behind Brandon Jacobs, he will have an easy time against defenses in the third and fourth quarters of games.

…DeAngelo Williams is the best running back currently in a time share. I project he has better seasons than both Chris Johnson and Brandon Jacobs. I expect him to finish as a top five running back this year despite all of the negative hype against him because of the presence of Jonathan Stewart.
