Club Green Aspires to Win Contest

Club Green has just entered a competition, hosted by Connecticut Light and Power Company (CL&P), in a creative battle with a monetary prize. In order to become a contestant, the club submitted a video, along with a 1,000-word essay that outlined what it has done to make Staples and Westport a greener environment to live in and why it needs CL&P’s help for future projects.

“It is important to make Westport greener because the town is renown for being a leader in Fairfield County. Hopefully other towns will follow in our footsteps towards a more eco-friendly community,” said Club Green co-president Nicole Brill ’11.

Club Green’s next goal is to fill Staples’ learning centers with double-sided printers, since the one that has been established in the library is already projected to save about 40 percent, or 350 reams, of paper a year. This will save the school $1,000. In addition, the club aspires to make EcoFest, the annual music and environmental festival in the spring, “out of this world,” according to Club Green President Ben Meyers ‘11.

The first round consists of public voting, and the judges choose the top four schools in round two. Three teams will win $5,000, but the grand prize is a total of $20,000 that can be used towards eco-friendly initiatives. Last year, Club Green claimed $5,000 and used this prize money to help fund EcoFest and purchase more recycling bins for Staples and its fields.

Voting for the contest begins on Wed., March 9, in which the public can vote for the best video up to ten times daily at CL&P, and will continue for two weeks.
