Westport students have received word of an early dismissal announcement.

At 10:20 a.m. Connect-ed sent emails messages announcing that  Staples would be dismissing at 11:40 a.m. Other schools are dismissing as well, after the bus runs of Staples students.

Several other public schools in Fairfield Country previously issued early dismissals, such as the public school districts of Greenwich, Darien, Stamford, New Canaan, Weston, and Wilton.

“Our superintendent is Dr. Elliot Landon. He makes the decision. I am waiting for the phone call just like everyone else. He tries to decide by 10 a.m. to be fair, but he can make the decision when he wants. No matter what declaration he makes, he gets angry phone calls,” Principal John Dodig said.

Not deciding until the last possible moment, 10 a.m., meant the cafeteria prepared food that wasn’t eaten, literally hundreds of Staples students were left waiting for buses that couldn’t make it to school on time, and teachers scrambled unnecessarily to make plans for their children (since most teachers can’t afford Westport and live elsewhere). It also put Westport students on the roads in the middle of icy conditions and teachers on the roads for long, icy commutes. Why is it possible for literally every single other school district to make a closure or early dismissal decision by 9 and most to make a decision by 6 a.m.? It’s simple consideration for all involved. Do we need a tragedy for the attitude to change?

i am a staples student and i just want to state that Dr. Elliot Landon must have grown up in Buffalo, New York- he must love the snow. It is unsafe to be driving in this weather. He is endangering us students because many students drive to school and are not used to driving in these conditions. Therefore, he should have cancelled school this morning and kept young drivers out of risk. Looking out the window right now, has lost his chance to prevent us students from the unsafe roads? School should be let out early before the storm hits its peak. Time’s ticking Dr. Landon…

Can we PLEASE have an early dismissal! I have work due at the end of the day and I need to know if we have one as soon as possible so that I know whether to do work during my free or not.
