Briefs of the Week: Nov. 9

“Guys and Dolls” Show to Debut

Staples Players will debut their adaptation of “Guys and Dolls” on Friday, Nov. 13.

Cast and crew have spent countless hours rehearsing and constructing one of the largest sets in recent Players’ history.

“Rehearsals are really hard work, but in the end it definitely pays off with the amazing Staples Players’ productions,” said cast member Cal Rider ’11. “This is going to be a really fun show to watch.

Director David Roth added, “The show is going to be terrific. It is very funny and one of my all time favorites.” Roth previously directed “Guys and Dolls” with Staples Players 10 years ago.

Even those not affiliated with the show are excited. “The Players always put in a lot of effort toward their productions, and I’m really looking forward to seeing it all come together,” said Grace McGovern ’11.

Tickets will be sold online, in the main lobby, and at the door on opening night. Adult tickets are $15 and students tickets are $10. There is a special offer for the Thursday, Nov. 19 showing; students can purchase tickets for $5 each.

Math Team Takes First Place at Recent Competition

The Staples Math team won its Nov. 4 meet, making it the number one team in Fairfield County. The meet brings together 22 public and private schools.

The Staples league is one of six in Connecticut. A math meet is composed of six rounds, featuring questions that draw on Geometry, Algebra 1 and 2, Trigonometry, complex numbers, and coordinate Geometry.

Last year, Greenwich High School defeated Staples by one point; this year, Staples defeated Greenwich to win first place.

“I predict them [the Math team] winning the whole thing this year,” said math team coach Bill Wilkes. “I predict in March we’ll be number one in Fairfield County, and I’ll predict we’ll win the state too.”

Captains Matt Greenberg ’10, Naveen Murali ’10 and Lena Ziskin ’10 led the team.
