Gordon Joseloff

On Education

During his first term, Joseloff took a tough stand on unions in order to make the budget work. Joseloff views the quality and safety of Westport public schools as a top priority for him.

“I will not compromise on education…I will not compromise on public safety,” Joseloff said.

On the Economy

In a second term, Joseloff hopes to relax some regulations to help local businesses attract more customers. He would also like to boost the town’s economy and attractiveness by creating a more pedestrian-friendly Main Street, a new parking garage, and by developing Baron South property.

“We want to make downtown much livelier,” Joseloff said.

On Going Green

If re-elected, Joseloff hopes to push for an even greener Westport. He hopes to expand community gardens, promote the use of hybrids, and return Wakeman Farm into a working farm, as it once was.

On Making Westport a Better Place

While education is crucial to Joseloff, he understands that Westport consists of more than just students.

“You’ve got to respond to the needs of all citizens…both young people and old people,” Joseloff said.

Joseloff, who is developing multi-housing condominiums. also plans to make living here more cost efficient, to keep senior citizens and other residents from moving away.

“Our vision is to keep Westport the greatest place to live, the greatest place to raise a family in, and the greatest place to retire to,” Joseloff said.

Gavin Anderson

On Education

When it comes to education, Anderson hopes to work with the Board of Education and administrators without stepping in their way. Anderson finds education too important to make sweeping cuts on, and would rather find cheaper ways to make it work with methods such as combining services.

On the Economy

“I’m a financial guy who’s had a lot of experience running big operations,” Anderson said.

While the current town budget covers only one year, his proposed budget would resemble the school’s budget and cover three years. He believes the one-year budget is simply a way to make things look better and push further spending into the next year.

On Going Green

As chairman of the maintenance committee, Anderson spent many years helping Westporters with major flooding problems around town.

He hopes to fix some of the major roads susceptible to flooding. In addition, Anderson hopes to revise the sewage plant by laying pipe and running all nitrogen water to the golf course.

On Making Westport a Better Place

Anderson hopes to revive the town itself through a series of ambitious plans, including a new community center.

“One of the things we’re losing in Westport is community…the thing the makes Westport unique,” Anderson said.

Anderson hopes to turn Jesup Green into a true town center by adding an arts center, restaurants, and even a community theater.

“Every time you lay that first brick you need to know where the next brick is and in what direction it’s going,” Anderson said.
