School Promises Junior Parking is Coming, But Not Soon Enough for Juniors

As the school year progresses and juniors continue to park and then walk the 10th of a mile to school from the Wakeman Fields, many juniors do not understand why they all must park at Wakeman when there are many spots available now.

“I think that it’s really unfair for juniors to not be able to park at Staples when there is literally an entire parking lot empty all day. The number of cars that are parked at Wakeman could all easily fit into the Staples parking lot,” said Megan Lipset ’11 about the empty spaces she sees every morning in the various student lots.

Juniors agree that seniors should have parking priority and that they have a right to this privilege over their younger classmates. They know that when they are seniors, they will expect the juniors to submit to the same rule, so most are willing to park at Wakeman to ensure that all seniors get spots.

What frustrates juniors is that they are still not permitted to park at Staples when there is an abundance of spots that seniors don’t need, and aren’t using.

The date of the Junior Parking Lottery, which will enable 50 juniors to park at Staples, has still not been officially announced. Juniors have collectively come to the conclusion that it will be in November, as it has been for the past few years.

But as November approaches, and as the temperature continues to drop, students have become frustrated with the delay, and don’t see why spots aren’t being distributed now.

“If there is a reason that the lottery is taking so long, they should let the students know why,” said Lipset.

Generally, juniors feel that the administration should allocate as many spaces to juniors as possible. Predicting that the many spots will still be open after the first lottery, many suggest that there should be additional lotteries.

“I think that the seniors should get all the spots that they need, but the school should make more spots for juniors. I think that once the seniors leave for internships, their spots should be given to juniors. We shouldn’t have to freeze if we don’t have to,” said Rebecca J-son-toft ‘11.

Francis Gives Parking details

Assistant Principal Richard Franciz, who deals with Staples Parking affairs, feels that there is a very logical explanation for this wait.

According to Franciz, the Junior Parking Lottery, which he says will occur sometime after Halloween, should not take place until the maximum amount of seniors have had a long-enough chance to get their licenses and begin parking at Staples. This way, Bob Herman, the security guard at Staples, can get an accurate count of how many parking spaces will need to be reserved.
