The aspiring journalists are off to their next adventure.

On Friday, September 25, the Advanced Journalism class took a field trip to Norwalk Community College for the Journalism Symposium. Here, schools from all over Fairfield County gathered to learn from the professionals about different aspects of journalism.

The leader of the Symposium was Lori Sunderland, a journalism teacher from NCC who ran the event.  Other major contributors were Stacey Wilkes of Darien High School, Robert Karl of Norwalk High School, and Stephen Rexford of Staples High School.

Lori Sunderland’s responsibility was to gather professionals willing to attend the Symposium.  One of whom was David McCumber, who works for Hearst Newspaper as Editor of the Stamford Advocate and Greenwich Time. Before the students went off to the three workshops that they were assigned to, McCumber talked about his experiences and knowledge of journalism.
“We need you in this profession and you can make a difference,” David McCumber said to the future journalists. With these hopeful words, the students dispersed to their workshops. In each class, they were attentive and ready to learn. In fact, when nine students from Westhill High School were asked if they wanted to be journalist in the future, all nine approved.

It was a day of learning and absorbing the life of a journalist, as all the students appeared to be open to receiving advise from the professionals.
“Have fun, enjoy yourselves, and learn a lot,” said Lori Sunderland.
