The Newest Robo

by Cole Manley ’11 and Ben Brancucci ’11

In the continuing security guard saga, Andrew Lawrence, son of track and field coach Laddie Lawrence, has become the new temporary replacement for Carlos Meilan, better known as Captain Carlos, who resigned effective November 13 for reasons unspecified.

Meilan was supposed to be the new Robo, ever since David Bennett left at the end of last year to work in Florida, but decided to leave the Staples community in search of a job elsewhere. Since Lawrence is the temporary replacement, the Staples administration still needs to find a long-term Robo and the search is up and running.

“We have two or three leads. In my experience you often get retired policeman who are trained so differently,” said Principal Dodig, “but if you have some experience in security and if you understand teenagers then [it] should [be] fine.” Working also as a Westport traffic officer, Andrew Lawrence has generously offered his time and service to temporarily be the security guard at Staples. However, because of his other job, Mr. Lawrence cannot stay on as the permanent guard. “Jason Bennett [the original Robo] is a hard man to replace,” said Dodig.
